The Blue Envelope Program is a collaborative effort to create a more inclusive and understanding environment for drivers with autism spectrum disorder. The envelope contains important personal information on the front, helping officers quickly identify and understand the driver’s needs. Inside the envelope, key driver documents and communication guidelines are included to help officers tailor their approach to the individual’s needs.

The primary goals of the program include:

• Providing officers with immediate, clear information about the driver’s condition.
• Offering a visual clue to ease stress for individuals with autism during a traffic stop.
• Simplifying the interaction between law enforcement and individuals with autism.
• Empowering individuals with autism and their families to be prepared for interactions with law enforcement.

We encourage individuals with autism and their families to take part in this initiative to promote safer and more effective interactions with law enforcement.
    
Getting your Blue Envelope
To request a Blue Envelope, you may either:

• Visit the Yellow Springs Police Department to request one in person.
• Complete THIS FORM to have an envelope mailed to you.
    
Preparing your Blue Envelope
Once you have obtained your Blue Envelope, the next step is to prepare it properly to ensure it serves its intended purpose during a traffic stop. This should not only include placing the right documents inside the envelope, but also knowing where to keep the envelope in your vehicle for easy access.

• Collect a copy of your current driver’s license and vehicle registration.
• Place documents into the Blue Envelope. The design of the envelope ensures that your documents are secure yet easily retrievable.

NOTE: Consider attaching your envelope to your sun visor or other easily accessible area. The placement ensures that the envelope is readily available should you need to present your documents quickly.     

• Inform family members: If you share your vehicle with family members or friends, inform them about the Blue Envelope and its purpose.
• Regularly update your documents: Make sure to replace any documents in the Blue Envelope with their most current versions. Keeping your information up to date is essential for avoiding any complications during a traffic stop.
     

Any individual with autism spectrum disorder can request a Blue Envelope. If the individual is a minor, a parent or guardian may request it on their behalf.
